Engine (sometimes) stops and refuses to start

Postby Shazzbat on Tue Apr 24, 2012 9:52 am

Hello wise guys. I have a (hope) little problem with my much beloved Ruby (P6 2200 SC 1973). Strip type speedo.

Sometimes the engine comes off when idling with no apparent reason and then refuses to start again. All the lights are OK and the starter spins correctly and powerful, but the engine doesn't start.

I did solve the matter by checking the spark plugs wires and by assuring a correct contact on all connections (dizzy, coil and spark plugs). First time it happened (top of all in a classic car meeting far away from home!) the result was OK and the car started at first try after checking. Back home with no other issues.

Yesterday same problem repeated again. This time I've removed the metalic distributor's shield (I've left the dizzy naked in the engine bay) trying to avoid any likely misconnection with the white wire. Again the car started at the first try.

But it's really scary that same problem happens again when away from home and the amendment could be not-so-succesful, so I want to get the issue sorted out before 19 of May, date of the next scheduled meeting.

I am suspicious about the white wire connected to the distributor, so I would like any of you informs me about that wire's function.

On the other hand I've removed the rev counter and binnacle (RHD type), so if any of you wants a binnacle (if not perfect at least 99%) to adapt to his dashboard I am willing to send it wherever in the world for free (only shipping cost). I also have got a couple of rev counters SD1 type, one of them with P6 screen fitted instead that could also be away for free. Not sure if they work right or not, be warned, although they could may be easily put in order again if they fall in hands familiar with electronics.

So anyone interested please let me know.

Thanks for your help and best regardz.
