If it does turn out to be the H/G it's not a disaster,you can do it yourself in a weekend,...... easy,plus,you'll have the piece of mind knowing that it's not going to fail on you in the future :wink:

if it is the h/g then i think i will probably get unleaded valve seats fitted, and then i will have to mess about with the tappets and while the heads off clean and paint the block and then it goes on and on :roll:

Can be hard to tell when it's the 'O' ring as they get worse quite quick once they start. You clean it all off, check for the leak and before you know it it's everywhere :shock:
Once you're sure the other possibles are crossed off your list it's a quick enough job :wink:

Easiest thing to do is to pressure wash the engine and then go out for a drive,if it turns out to be the cam cover gasket then a smear of Hylomar Blue might cure it :wink:

its not a quick job for me grim once i take things off i just cant help myself from cleaning and painted everything that comes off :D plus i realy want to paint the block i got the paint months back. :)

A momentary digression...
Where did you get the paint for the block? Is it the orginal silvery-green colour?
My engine is in bits at the mo and I'm planning to paint the block and polish the cam cover before reassembling it all next week. I was going to paint it a silver colour I found (heat proof) that pretty much exactly matches the natural colour of the ally head. But would prefer to do it the original colour.

I agree with others, that the most likely problem is the head gasket, I had the same thing thought it was the rear mains oil seal but after replacing the oil seal it still leaked and yes it was the "O" ring on the head gasket.

I too have had problems with the 'o' ring at the the back of the head causing oil leaks. When I refitted my head, the gasket kit was missing the 'o' ring. Shortly after putting it all back together, there was a load of oil dripping down the back of the engine block. So, if you remove the head, strongly advise you replace this 'o' ring as a matter of course. It is not pleasant having to remove the head again just to replace a cheap 'o' ring!
