Now the weather has warmed up, this has become more of a problem. The coil is getting hot. Hotter than it should be and the symptoms seem to fit. A replacement has been ordered. Will update with the results.

For the first time since I've owned her (27 years), I had fuel vapourisation occur in the P5B just as I got to the RSR stand at the Enfield pageant on Sunday. A quick burst of the electric fuel pump I fitted as back-up cured it instantly. 8)

Do you mean Alpinair, as in the company that used to exist in Honeypot Lane, Queensbury? I worked there for a short time in the early 80s. Never saw a P6 in the garage. Many S3 Jags and SD1s and some Range Rovers. 5 cylinder Audi 100s were just starting to appear too.

Rotor arm? I've had a bad rotor arm cause a coil to overheat and the engine torun like crap until it cools down.

Did you order Lucas DBL105 or DBL110? I'm not sure, but I think 105 is for the non-ballasted system of the S1 and 110 for the S2. If there are two wires on the positive side of your coil you have a ballasted system. 1 wire, as Chris York said, from the starter solenoid with no resistance so allowing the ignition system to have only 1.5 ohms resistance thus giving a stronger spark and when the solenoid is switched off the feed comes through the ballasted wire. Making up for 3 ohms total and having a lower input.

Yeah thanks, I am sure you are right. My car is at the menders now. I don't have metering equipment to deal with this myself. It seems as if the whole problem stems from a poor installation of aftermarket electronic ignition which, although in itself, is working the butchery committed on the loom has caused feedback into the ignition system, bringing it up to around 16v!! I'm having it put back to points while it is there anyway to make it more original. I hope to be able to update soon that all is working as it should be.
I had to find somewhere nearby to avoid having to trailer the car or risk another breakdown. I was lucky to find a garage with a P6 enthusiast and former 3500S owner. If the outcome is good I will give them a plug.
