Need a new thermostat?

Postby brynrosa123 on Sat Apr 14, 2012 3:56 pm

Hi from N.Wales. Clive, my 1968 P6 V8, is running hotter than usual and I wondered if the thermostat might be done? I have had the radiator flushed out recently when a new water pump was fitted but even in this cold weather the temperature guage is now nearer hot than normal. Could the thermostat be the problem, if so I have located one through this forum on e-bay.
Many thanks.

It could be, or it could be a faulty guage or its sender unit. Run the car up to temperature and feel the top hose to tell when the stat opens, and you should be able to tell at that time whether the engine is hotter than it should be at that point without reference to the guage.

Another thing to consider is the volage regulator. Have you noticed the temperature and fuel guages rising as the engine RPM increases?

Thanks, the guages are not affected by the revs so I will try suggestion 1.

Hi, eventually the problem is fixed after new thermostat, temperature sender then a new radiator ... as it transpired that the one in Clive was not the correct one. This had been fitted when he was put back on the road way back when. Anyway, the new one`s brackets were in the wrong position but thanks to Winns and my local garage all has been resolved.
He is pleased to be back home after his extended garage holiday. I think I`ll take a mechanicking course !!!
Regards to all from N.Wales.
